The early morning sunlight is starting to filter in through the open drapes when a phone ringing in the distance wakes me up. Clayton eases me over and quickly climbs out of bed, then I hear his whispered, “This better be life or death.”
I roll over and listen to his side of the conversation through the closed door. “Why the fuck are you bugging me?” There’s a pause, and I hear his hand hit the wall before he snaps, “I’m not going to get into this with you right now.” Another lengthy pause, and Clayton sighs and growls, “Mom and Dad don’t get to decide my love life. Neither do you. I’ll decide who I have a relationship with, not you.” My ears perk up at the mention of a relationship. I know I shouldn’t be listening to this private conversation, but I can’t help myself. “Look, right now, I’m not looking for a long-term relationship. That’s all you need to know.” I ignore the rest of his conversation after my heart shatters at his words. We haven’t discussed long-term plans, but I’d thought him showing up at my sister’s wedding was a sign that he wanted more with me. His words of obsession are meaningless, it seems.
I dress in jean shorts and a long shirt and toss my things in a bag before he finishes his call. After grabbing my suitcase and purse, I rush out into the suite’s living room. I’m shocked to run into my boss, Orion Quinlan, dragging my shocked friend out the front door. Jenna bites her lip and allows Mr. Quinlan to drag her to the suite’s main door. I push my shock aside and manage to ask, “Mr. Quinlan, what are you doing here?”
“Calista, I’m going to be taking a few days off. Rearrange our meetings until late next week at the earliest, and call my cell with only absolute emergencies. Call down and have a car ready to take me to the airport, and have them get the plane ready to go.” He continues pulling Jenna down the hall, and I pull out my cellphone to carry out his orders.
Trying to figure out how to proceed, I rush down to the lobby while making the necessary calls. Luck is on my side; I’m able to get a flight to London within just a few hours. Forcing myself into work mode, I tell myself I’ll get over the asshole by getting on with my job. Since our meetings here are rescheduled, I’ll head to our London office and get a head start on our next round of projects. When the car pulls up, I jump inside. Then I send a quick text to Thane, explaining everything and getting his promise to keep my plans a secret. He texts back: You owe me big time.
I lay my head back against the car’s headrest and stare out the window. My heart is broken, but I can’t feel regret for the nights I spent with Clayton Stone.
